Programme of Study on HIV & Family Education
One of the first concerns in the present Indian health scenario
is on the appalling pandemic of HIV/AIDS. Every region in India
is experiencing a snowballing increase in the transmission of
HIV. India has the largest number of HIV infected. The WHO/UN
AIDS estimate it to be four million. The infection is spilling
over from high-risk groups and from urban to rural areas through
migrant workers and truck drivers. Most of the cases reported
are in the age group of 15 to 49. The male female ratio is 3:1.
As it stands Information, Education and Communication Strategy
is one of the most important and effective means for the prevention
of this pandemic. Since there is no cure for AIDS available anywhere
in the world, we need to concentrate on education and awareness.
The programme of study, which is offered through distant mode
of learning, will be useful for school-teachers, para-medicals,
NGO functionaries, etc. The course is aimed at giving better understanding
on the nature of AIDS/STDs and its transmission; to help to make
informed decisions about behaviour that protect one from AIDS/STDs
and drug addiction; develop positive attitude towards those who
are infected; develop skills initiating action-oriented programmes
for the prevention and control of AIDS and substance abuse, sensitizing
people, initiating teaching, research, and extension programmes,
etc.
