International Conference on “Depression” at the Vatican in November
Depression
is classified as one of the main “killer” diseases
in the contemporary world. Absurdity and the absence
of meaning in life lead to terrible states of depression
that end up in death. The Pontifical Council for
Health Pastoral Care is organizing its 18 th International
Conference on this theme from
13 to 15 November 2003 at the Vatican .
The Conference will examine, in
the first place, what depression is and its current
situation in contemporary society, then proceeds
to an in-depth study on the issue, which includes
also a theological reflection and an inter-religious
understanding. Speaking on the theme, Archbishop
Javier Lozano Barragan, the President of the Pontifical
Council said, “We cannot remain indifferent of the
numerous suicides, which constantly increase with
the progress of industrial urban culture. We
need to take Christ's redemptive action seriously,
and show its efficacy in the actual circumstances
wherein we live today.” For details on the Conference and
