As the dawn of a new era of collaborative endeavour in healthcare apostolate, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has entered into an agreement with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to impart quality education relevant to the health and social welfare sectors in our country. The inauguration of the CBCI-IGNOU Chair on Health and Social Welfare and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) were held on February 29, 2000, at the CBCI Centre, New Delhi.

Purpose:

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India instituted a “Chair for Studies in Health and Social Welfare” at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. The purpose is to encourage research of high standard and quality, the development of programmes of study on subjects of direct interest and relevance to the health and social welfare sectors of our country. A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on University on February 29, 2000.

With the support of the Commission for Health, the CBCI-IGNOU Chair developed Programmes of Study on “HIV and Family Education’, which is offered in the distant mode of learning. (For details see the section)

The first Course offered by the Chair, “HIV and Family Health Education”, was initiated in November 2001. It is estimated that four million of the HIV infected persons now live in India; the largest in the world. One million new adults will be added to this list every year. That means a mind-boggling rate of infection – two per minute. Half a million young people below the age of 25 years will become infected. Nearly thirty thousand new born will carry infection from their mother’s womb and every year 20,000 will die due to HIV/AIDS. Forty thousand deaths every year, one or more per minute! One hundred and twenty thousand children will be orphaned. At present there is no cure for AIDS available anywhere in the world. Therefore, education and communication remains the only way to prevent and control this epidemic.
